UK workflow
Before replacing a UK ISP hub, check these six things
The Wi-Fi standard on the box is rarely the deciding factor. Start with the access technology and WAN requirements.
1. Is it FTTP or FTTC/SOGEA?
FTTP normally gives you Ethernet from an ONT. FTTC/SOGEA can require your replacement device to include a VDSL modem.
2. What WAN authentication does the ISP use?
PPPoE is common on several UK profiles. Sky can require line-specific DHCP/MER behavior instead.
3. Is VLAN configuration needed?
Some DSL profiles use VLAN 101 while some FTTP profiles explicitly do not. Never copy a VLAN value from the wrong access type.
4. Does the router support the exact special option?
For Sky, DHCP Option 61 can matter on some lines. Brand-wide claims are unsafe; verify the exact model/firmware.
5. Do you need Digital Voice or ISP TV?
Hub-dependent phone or TV features can turn a direct internet replacement into a keep-the-hub topology.
6. Is AP/bridge mode actually the better goal?
If you mainly want better Wi-Fi, keeping the ISP box for access/authentication and using your mesh as an AP can be simpler and more supportable.
