Using your own router in Singapore
Singapore fibre setups make the ONT/ONR distinction especially important. StarHub documents ONT + router as the flexible topology, MyRepublic offers no-router options on current plans, while Singtel's 5Gbps Enhanced plan explicitly does not offer bridge mode.
ONT gives you the cleanest router choice
An ONT terminates fibre and hands Ethernet to a separate router. StarHub's current guide describes this as the flexible setup where users can choose and upgrade the router independently.
ONR means the provider box is also the router
With an ONR, adding another router can require bridge support or AP mode to avoid double NAT. Not every plan exposes bridge mode.
Plan speed matters
Singapore's multi-gig plans can exceed the WAN/LAN capacity of ordinary consumer routers. Protocol compatibility is only useful if the ports can carry the subscribed speed.
