Using your own router in New Zealand

New Zealand providers often publish unusually clear BYO settings, but the WAN method is not universal. Spark Fibre uses PPPoE + VLAN 10, One NZ Fibre/HFC uses IPoE/DHCP + VLAN 10, and Skinny Fibre currently documents PPPoE with VLAN tagging disabled.

Do not copy the VLAN rule from the wrong ISP

Spark and One NZ both use VLAN 10 on the cited Fibre profiles, but Skinny's current BYO Fibre instructions explicitly say VLAN tagging off. The common country does not imply a common WAN profile.

The ONT still matters

For Fibre, the provider-facing optical network is terminated by the ONT. Your own router connects by Ethernet, then applies the provider's PPPoE or DHCP/VLAN rules.

Voice can force provider equipment back into the path

One NZ says its voice calling over broadband service requires a supported One NZ modem, so an internet-only compatibility result does not automatically cover voice.
