Can I use my own router with Sky Broadband?
Sometimes, but router model and access type matter more than the Wi-Fi standard. Full Fibre can be direct on compatible hardware, while current vendor guidance keeps eero and non-DSL Deco behind the Sky hub. FTTC needs a compatible VDSL modem-router and MER-style settings. Sky Talk remains hub-dependent.
Why Sky gets a conservative verdict
There is no single 'supports PPPoE = works with Sky' rule. Current guidance varies between DHCPv6 behavior, DHCPv4 Option 61 and MER-style configurations depending on line/access type.
Router examples matter
eero's current Sky guidance keeps the Sky hub because eero does not support Sky MER. TP-Link's current non-DSL Deco FTTP guidance is also hub-first. ASUS RT-AX86U Pro exposes Option 61, so it gets a different—but still verification-required—result.
FTTC is a modem problem too
On Sky FTTC the replacement hardware must terminate VDSL before authentication even matters. An Ethernet-only mesh cannot directly replace the DSL modem function.
