Can I replace the Virgin Media Hub with my own router?

Usually the Virgin access device remains in the path. Hub 3, 4 and 5 can use modem mode so your own router handles routing and Wi-Fi. Virgin's current help marks modem mode unavailable on Hub 5x.

Why the Hub stays

The Hub is not only a Wi-Fi router; it is also the cable-side access device. Modem mode turns off the routing role without removing that physical function.

Hub 5x needs a different plan

If modem mode is unavailable on the exact Hub, the safer setup is to keep the Hub routing and run the new mesh in AP/bridge mode rather than create an unsupported direct topology.

Avoid double NAT when possible

If both the Virgin Hub and your router are routing, inbound connections, some VPNs and gaming can become harder to manage. Use modem/AP modes intentionally.
